OUR HISTORY
Covenant College was established in 1988, with a modest 100 students and 11 staff members. Covenant College has grown from a small school into a prosperous and relevant community school with a strong Christian ethos.
Thousands of learners have walked our corridors and occupied our classrooms. Many of whom have taken up their rightful place and made a meaningful contribution to society.
Covenant College celebrated its 30th Anniversary in the 2018 school year. It was a year of great celebration as we looked back on our past with pride. As we stand, we look confidentially toward our future, for throughout our storied history, the school has gone through many transformations that have enhanced its mission and propelled its growth as an educational institution of excellence.
The Birth of Covenant College
The first classrooms were built in true fellowship, fathers and students alike gave up their weekends and built the lower tier of the school. Brick by brick the school went up and when the work was completed, we sat back and saw that it was good. Finally, the workstations were brought into the various classrooms and the learning process could begin in earnest.
Fundraising was a vital part of our school’s early growth and development. One such fundraising event, which was arranged by our parents, provided us with an experiential delight. The International Food Fair, exposed our palettes to delectable cuisine with rich sweet and savoury aromas. Parents had taken time to meticulously prepare traditional meals from Portugal, Britain, Italy, Greece, Scandinavia and our own home South Africa.
“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory” (Phil. 4:19). With our ever growing school the need for more developed grounds became a priority. A few of our parents donated the funds, which provided the grass for the field and several beautiful trees to be planted around our school. Should you walk through the quad in front of the Primary School Administrative block, you will still see these steadfast trees which were planted so many years ago.
The nature which surrounds our school became a fundamental part of the education and communion of our learners, not only with nature but with the Lord. The learners would study the flora and fauna. The memory of learners hopping and skipping among the rocks at the stream in front of our school, glass bottles in hand to collect their discoveries. Tadpoles, frogs and reeds with little pebbles were brought back to the science laboratory to be examined. Behind the church at the very top of the koppie, stands a rock, which was fondly referred to as “Prayer Rock”. On various occasions the staff and learners went to “Prayer Rock” and prayed for our various needs. “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” (Psalm 18:2)
So many exciting memories and joyous activities took place that year, culminating in the production of our school song. The words written with the utmost care. “We are set apart for His honour; We are set apart for His glory.” Covenant College has indeed been ‘set apart’. It was but a little farm school, called into being.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” From the vision given to our founders we have followed the Lord’s plan, from small beginnings, we have prospered and been protected in the continued learning and teaching of His word, the fellowship between parents, learners and teachers continues to give us hope in the future far beyond the last 30 years.
